cover your hair, your face
cover your anger, your hurt, your disgust
smile, don’t look up, talk back,
better yet, SAY NOTHING.
don’t interfere, hold it in
remember your place, keep it down
play your role, nurture that womb
be THE FLY ON THE WALL.
wear the burqa, the ghoonghat,
the bindi, sindoor,
the laaj, the maryada;
strip it all – but only WHEN TOLD.
remember who we are:
a mother, sister, wife, even goddess
but a GIRL, a WOMAN, a BEING, a PERSON
that ain’t our birthright,
we’ll just have to fight for it!
